How to install GB WhatsApp Pro on Android

The complete install — from backup to your first chat — takes about ten minutes on any Android 5.0+ phone. This guide covers every step in detail, explains what each Android warning means, and includes a troubleshooting section for the eight most common install issues.

What you need before you start

GB WhatsApp Pro runs on almost every Android phone made in the last seven years. The bar to get going is intentionally low — no root, no developer mode, no custom recovery.

  • Android version 5.0 or higher (Marshmallow and above)
  • Processor Any 64-bit ARM CPU made in or after 2016
  • Storage At least 95 MB free for the APK + 200 MB working room
  • Internet Required for OTP verification and chat restore
  • Root access Not required — installs as a standard app

Heads-up: if you already use the official WhatsApp on this phone, you do not have to uninstall it. GB WhatsApp Pro installs as a separate app and runs alongside it without conflict.

The walkthrough

The 8 install steps, in detail

Each step lists the exact taps, what you should see on screen, and the most likely thing that can go wrong. Follow them in order.

  1. Step 01

    Back up your existing WhatsApp chats

    Before any change to your messaging setup, save a fresh copy of your chats. This step is mandatory if you already use the official WhatsApp on the same phone.

    2. 2 Tap the three-dot menu (top-right) → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup.
    3. 3 Tap the green Back Up Now button.
    4. 4 Wait until the bar fills and the backup timestamp updates.
    What you should see

    The backup writes to /storage/WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt14 (the official app folder). A local copy is enough — Google Drive sync is optional.

    If something goes wrong

    If the Back Up Now button is greyed out, check that you have at least 200 MB of free storage. Free space first, then retry.

  2. Step 02

    Allow Install Unknown Apps for your browser

    Android blocks installs from outside the Play Store by default. You need to flip one permission for the browser you will use to download the APK.

    2. 2 Go to Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps (or Settings → Security → Install Unknown Apps on older Android).
    3. 3 Find the browser you will use (Chrome, Firefox, Brave) and tap it.
    4. 4 Toggle "Allow from this source" ON.
    What you should see

    You only need to do this once per browser. Android remembers the choice for future downloads.

    If something goes wrong

    On stock Samsung One UI, this lives under Settings → Apps → (browser) → Install unknown apps. On Xiaomi MIUI, search for "Unknown" in Settings.

  3. Step 03

    Download the GB WhatsApp Pro APK

    Get the latest verified build directly from this site. The APK is scanned through VirusTotal before publication — see the safety panel for the live scan report.

    What you should see

    Chrome may show a banner saying "This type of file can harm your device." That warning appears for every APK downloaded outside the Play Store — tap "Keep" or "Download anyway" to continue.

    If something goes wrong

    If the download stalls midway, try a different network (mobile data vs WiFi, or vice versa). If it still fails, retry — the server resumes from where it left off.

  4. Step 04

    Verify the file (optional, but recommended)

    For extra peace of mind, compare the SHA-256 hash of the downloaded APK against the one published on our download page. Identical hashes prove the file has not been tampered with in transit.

    2. 2 On your phone, install any free hash checker app (Hash Droid, HashCheck, etc.).
    3. 3 Open the app, pick the downloaded GB WhatsApp Pro APK file, and run SHA-256.
    4. 4 Compare the result with the hash from our site — they must match character for character.
    What you should see

    A matching hash means the file is identical to the one we tested in our lab. Mismatch means the file was corrupted during download or tampered with — do not install it.

    If something goes wrong

    If the hashes do not match, delete the downloaded APK and re-download. If it still does not match after a fresh download, email [email protected] immediately.

  5. Step 05

    Open the APK and tap Install

    The install itself takes seconds. The only screen worth slowing down on is the Play Protect warning — it is expected, not an actual threat.

    1. 1 Open your browser notification bar or the Files app and tap the downloaded APK.
    2. 2 Read the permission summary on the install prompt.
    3. 3 Tap Install.
    4. 4 If Play Protect shows a warning, tap "Install Anyway" (or "More details" → "Install Anyway").
    5. 5 Wait a few seconds. The progress bar fills, then turns into an Open button.
    What you should see

    Play Protect's warning is shown for any APK installed outside the Play Store — it is a generic alert, not specific to GB WhatsApp Pro. Our build is verified through VirusTotal with zero detections, and the scan report is public.

    If something goes wrong

    If you see "App not installed" — uninstall the existing GB WhatsApp Pro if you have an older build, then retry. Hash mismatch can also cause this — re-verify the SHA-256.

  6. Step 06

    Open the app and verify your phone number

    GB WhatsApp Pro uses the same verification flow as the official WhatsApp. Enter your number, wait for the OTP, type it in.

    2. 2 Accept the terms screen.
    3. 3 Pick your country code, then enter your mobile number.
    4. 4 Wait for the OTP via SMS or voice call. Enter it.
    5. 5 Allow the Contacts, Storage, and Camera permissions when asked.
    What you should see

    OTP arrives in 5-30 seconds for most carriers in India. If the SMS does not come, the "Call me" option triggers a voice call with the OTP read out.

    If something goes wrong

    If the OTP never arrives, wait the full 2-minute timeout and use "Call me" instead. Carrier blocks on GB-related SMS are rare but reported — switching SIM or trying a different time of day usually resolves it.

  7. Step 07

    Restore your chat backup

    If you backed up in step 1, GB WhatsApp Pro detects it automatically and offers to restore. Media files re-download from the WhatsApp server, which takes longer on a slow connection.

    1. 1 When the "Backup found" prompt appears after verification, tap Restore.
    2. 2 Wait while messages restore (usually under 30 seconds).
    3. 3 Allow media to re-download in the background — you can use the app while this completes.
    What you should see

    Chat history, contact pictures, and group conversations come back. Media files (images, videos, voice notes) re-download from WhatsApp servers in the background — your chats stay usable during this.

    If something goes wrong

    If the "Backup found" prompt does not appear, your backup might be in /storage/WhatsApp/Databases/ instead of /storage/GBWhatsApp/Databases/. Rename the WhatsApp folder to GBWhatsApp and reinstall.

  8. Step 08

    Configure profile and privacy

    Set up your profile and turn on the privacy features that drew you to GB WhatsApp Pro in the first place. None of this is required — but most users do it on day one.

    1. 1 Set your display name and profile picture.
    2. 2 Open the three-dot menu → GB Settings → Privacy.
    3. 3 Toggle on: Freeze Last Seen, Hide Blue Ticks, Hide Typing, Hide View Status — whichever match your preference.
    4. 4 Optional: turn on the in-app lock (Privacy → Lock WhatsApp) for fingerprint protection.
    What you should see

    Privacy settings take effect immediately. You can change them anytime from the same menu.

    If something goes wrong

    If GB Settings is missing, your install may have completed mid-update. Force-close the app, reopen, and try again. If still missing, reinstall the APK over the existing app.

  9. All done — you are on GB WhatsApp Pro

    You can start chatting straight away. Explore the GB Settings menu when you have time — none of those tweaks are required to use the app.

Permissions

What permissions the app asks for, and why

GB WhatsApp Pro requests exactly the same permissions as the official WhatsApp client — nothing extra. Here is what each one is for so you can decide on each prompt with full context.

  • Contacts

    Read your address book so chats show real names instead of phone numbers.

  • SMS

    Auto-detect the OTP during number verification. Not used afterwards.

  • Storage

    Save chat media, themes, and your backup file.

  • Phone

    Read your phone number for the verification flow.

  • Camera

    Take photos and scan QR codes (optional — only used when you tap the camera button).

Troubleshooting

When something does not work

The eight errors below cover roughly 95% of install issues we see reported. Find the closest match and follow the fix.

App not installed — what does this error mean?

Three usual causes. (1) An older GB WhatsApp build with a different signature is already installed — uninstall it first, then try again. (2) The APK was corrupted during download — clear the file and re-download. (3) Storage is full — free at least 200 MB and retry.

Play Protect blocked the install completely. How do I bypass it?

On the warning screen, tap "More details" → "Install Anyway". If Play Protect won't let you proceed at all, go to Play Store → Profile icon → Play Protect → Settings → toggle off "Scan apps with Play Protect" temporarily. Turn it back on after install.

The app crashes on first open. What do I do?

Force-close the app from Recents, then reopen it. If it still crashes, clear app data from Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp Pro → Storage → Clear Data, then go through verification again. Your chats stay safe in the backup file.

My chat backup is not detected.

The app looks for the backup at /storage/GBWhatsApp/Databases/. If you are coming from the official WhatsApp, that backup lives at /storage/WhatsApp/Databases/. Use any file manager to rename the WhatsApp folder to GBWhatsApp before opening GB WhatsApp Pro for the first time.

OTP verification never arrives.

Wait the full 2-minute timeout, then tap "Call me" — a voice call reads the OTP out loud. If both fail, try after 15 minutes (rate limit) or switch to a different network. Some Indian carriers occasionally rate-limit OTP traffic for modded clients.

WhatsApp said my account was banned. What now?

Account bans are rare on the latest build but possible. Open the official WhatsApp once, follow the ban-appeal flow ("Request a review"), and wait. Bans on GB WhatsApp are usually temporary (24-72 hours). For long-term safety, do not use a modified client on business or banking-tied numbers.

The app installs but takes forever to start.

First launch can take 30-60 seconds on older devices because the app builds its local databases. If it sits on the splash screen for over 2 minutes, kill the app and reopen — second launch is much faster.

GB Settings menu is missing from the three-dot menu.

Force-close the app and reopen it. If still missing, the install probably completed mid-update — download the APK again and install over the existing app. Your chats stay intact during this kind of re-install.

The honest safety picture

GB WhatsApp Pro is a modified Android client maintained by an independent developer community. Here is what you should know.

What is safe

Every APK published on this site is scanned through 70 plus antivirus engines on VirusTotal before going live. The SHA-256 hash is shown on the download page so you can verify the file you receive is identical to the one we tested. The app makes no calls to unknown trackers in our network monitoring tests.

What carries some risk

WhatsApp's detection system can flag a modified client. The risk is small with the current anti-ban layer (none observed in our seven-day test runs), but it is not zero. If you depend on your number for work, banking, or a verified business account, stick with the official app.

What to do once you have installed

  • Keep a fresh chat backup every week — copy the GBWhatsApp folder to Google Drive or a PC.
  • Turn on the in-app lock (Privacy → Lock WhatsApp) for fingerprint protection.
